wieder ausgetrickst, belogen,
reingelegt und raffiniert
an der Nase rumgeführt.
Ich hatte gerade erst begonn’
auf die Beine zu komm.
Diesmal gebe ich auf
vorerst habt ihr gewonn’
So weit, so schlecht gereimt (besonders raffiniert: “begonn” – “komm” – “gewonn”). Warum am Boden? Wer hat dich ausgetrickst? Warum gibst Du auf? Wer hat gewonnen?
Aber glaub’ mir,
dieses Ende wird ein Anfang sein!
Wir werden ganz von vorn beginn’!
Dieses Ende wird ein Anfang sein!
Wer immer verliert, muss irgendwann gewinn’.
Wer immer verliert, muss irgendwann gewinn’.
Ach so, alles Schlampen außer Mutti? Der Ehrliche ist der Dumme? Und jetzt kriegen sie dich? Wer? Warum? Wofür?
Also glaub’ mir…
Ja glaub’ mir,
dieses Ende wird ein Anfang sein!
Wir werden ganz von vorn beginn’!
Dieses Ende wird ein Anfang sein!
Wer immer verliert, muss irgendwann gewinn’.
Britney Spears is about to release a new singles collection celebrating her decade of making music. And even though the album will feature “Baby One More Time,” the pop classic “Toxic,” and “Womanizer” there will be new tracks including the single that debuted today on the radio.
3 – Britney Spears
I’ve found what seems to be the non-radio rip. A HQ version. Enjoy it!
I don’t know what I think about the track. Loving, loving, loving the production by Max Martin, but the number and theme seems extremely arbitrary – even for Britney Spears.
I mean, why the number 3? It just doesn’t make sense…
No matter. It is a giant dance number that holds an “old Britney”-style bridge that could have been lifted from her early albums which then segues back into the hyper-produced dance electronica. It is certainly representative of her overall career, it doesn’t make too much sense, it’s incredibly produced, there’s no real singing in it and it has a fucking unstoppably catchy countdown chorus.
I can’t say that this song will catapult her to number 1 again, but it’ll certainly be played on dance floors and radios for at least a few months. Get ready.
Embrace it. It’s fun.
Isn’t that what the Britney brand has always been about? Yeah. It’s fun!
Of all the relationships between music and drugs that I have, or will discuss, reggae and cannabis is probably the most complex, as the roots of this union are buried deep within Jamaica’s cultural, political and spiritual history.
A country separated by political beliefs, Jamaica’s working class have been using ‘ganja’ since Indian workers brought it into the country in 1845, and in the Jamaican religion Rastafari it is referred to as the sacred herb. The Rastafari holy text is the Holy Piby, which is allegedly the closest relation to the first version of the Old Testament, (from which the Rastafari pulled the references to the beneficial herb in Genesis and Revelations). In order to fully understand reggae, we must know more about Rastafarianism, as the musicians were engrossed into its ways.
The Rastafari believed that because of their African ancestry, Africa was Zion, a promised land which they must return home to, in order to become whole and complete spiritually. Whilst they were living in the world of persecution and oppression, they were in Babylon. Their use of marijuana was not just hedonistic either; the drug was used for spiritual purposes, bringing the Rastas closer to god, and in the hallucinogenic field to induce ‘ganja-vision’ – an important part of the male rights of passage during adolescence. With their sacramental herb (and the country’s largest export) outlawed, the Rastas were always facing persecution, and this helped shape the protest music of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and similar artists.
Reggae became big worldwide, and the sentiment of the Rastafari carried with it; marijuana became fashionable again amongst youth culture. If we look at how both Rastafarianism and reggae has latched onto cannabis culture, we can see that smokers today still enjoy reggae; Bob Marley has become a cult figure inside this culture, and the colours of Jah cover many pieces of smoking paraphernalia. The universal appeal of reggae to the seasoned ‘pot-head’ could simply be down to the fact that it was made by those in a similar state of consciousness; there may be (to a certain extent) a universal way in which the music is perceived, through the drug forming a shared unconscious mind between the listeners. This would make much sense as the general feel of reggae is the epitome of ganja; made up of slow paced, chilled out but funky music, perfect to just sit and relax to.
I have admittedly taken a while to do another music review because I knew Mr. Andrew Bird was next. Yeah, sorry Andrew Bird fans… this wont be exactly a great review.
Originally from the Chicago area, Andrew Bird is a pop/folk singer that has made quite a name for himself. I gotta admit, I dont really get it.
Well, actually, yeah I kinda do. I just dont buy into it really.
Let me lay out the positives:
Extremely talented. Im not gonna knock that. The dude can play anything. Hes multitalented and really knows just about everything when it comes to music. He grew up surrounded by it. Classical, Irish folk, etc. It is clear it all influenced him. Ive not been to his shows but he is quite known for always changing up his own songs and improvising nuances spur of the moment on stage which sounds pretty impressive to me. He doesnt sound like any pop music out there.
Ok, thats as far as I can go with the positive stuff.
HES SOOO BOOOORING….. UGH! Its the reason it took me so long to do this blog. Everytime I was prepared to type it I would automatically just shut down and be like “meh too far”.
Look, you can be talented. You can have a really great gift for music. Its what you DO with that gift that makes it good. He didnt do that for me. He just made it mainstream and mediocre. I dont know if he did it on purpose or not but either way, it worked in the sense that he became “popular” like a hipster with individually actually has become mainstream in itself. Its not too original for me. I dont hear an Andrew Bird song and feel anything.
Now for you Bird fans, hey, its totally fine if you like him. Thats the thing. Hes not BAD he just bores me. Hes trying to be quirky and offbeat but it just seems so… i dunno, produced. Is that a bad thing? I dunno. I just know I am not crazy about it.
Hey like I always say its just how I feel, not saying its right or wrong, just my opinion.
Video time: I actually like this video. Im not crazy about the song, its alright but the video is cute. Its for his song Imitosis.
Amerie herself revealed the cover to her upcoming album In Love & War on her Twitter earlier this morning. It’s simply stunning, and blows just about any other album cover I’ve seen in awhile out of the water. It will be released in the US on November 3, and will be her fourth studio album (her third, Because I Love It, unfortunately never saw the light of day here in the states).

Just a castaway
An island lost at sea
Another lonely day
With no one here but me
More loneliness
Than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair
I’ll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle
A year has passed since I wrote my note
But I should have known this right from the start
Only hope can keep me together
Love can mend your life
But love can break your heart
I’ll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle
Walked out this morning
Don’t believe what I saw
A hundred billion bottles
Washed up on the shore
Seems I’m not alone at being alone
A hundred billion castaways
Looking for a home
I’ll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle
The Best Of Junior (1995)
Singer/songwriter Junior sparked the British R&B/pop invasion of the ’80s with his classic “Mama Used to Say.” Though Sade Loose Ends, Soul II Soul, and Billy Ocean had more hits, it’s worth noting that Junior was a pioneer when he created and presented British-based R&B/pop music to audiences outside the U.K. some ten years earlier. Many of his sides can be found on the 1995 Mercury CD The Best of Junior.
Born in London, Junior Giscombe grew up listening to his older brothers’ and sisters’ record collection, which included the doo-wop of the Moonglows, the Dells, early Motown, Otis Redding, and the reggae music of Toots and the Maytals and Bob Marley. Though as a teenager he sang lead in a local band, music more or less remained a hobby until he chose a full-time music career after college in the mid-’70s. His inspiration was Philly soul writers Thom Bell and Linda Creed, Gene McFadden, and John Whitehead. A British independent label released his single, “Hot Up & Heated,” but it was Polygram’s subsidiary Phonogram that gave him his first major-label opportunity. The label was rewarded when the infectious “Mama Used to Say” became a major American hit in 1982, parked at number two R&B for two weeks and number 30 pop. His follow-up to “Mama Used to Say” was the number eight R&B smash “Too Late” and both were on his Ji album. His second album, 1983’s Inside Looking Out, included “Communication Breakdown” and the popular ballad “Baby I Want You Back.”
In 1984, Junior teamed with renowned producer Arif Mardin for Acquired Taste, which spawned the singles “Somebody,” “Oh Louise” (Top 20 R&B), “Look What You’ve Done for Me,” and the phat, funky “Tonight.” One of his tracks, “Unison,” appeared on the soundtrack for About Last Night and was a huge dance hit. That same year, Junior wrote and recorded “Do You Want My Love” for the multi-platinum soundtrack from the blockbuster Eddie Murphy movie Beverly Hills Cop. In 1987, Junior had his biggest European hit, “Another Step,” a duet with Kim Wilde and just the first of a string of performances with Wilde. Towards the end of 1987, Junior completed work on his fourth and final album for Polygram, Sophisticated Street. The LP yielded the hit “Yes If You Want Me.” After a period of self-evaluation, Junior began working with producer Alan Glass, Soul II Soul’s Simon Law, Robbie Taylor, and Greg Smith for his 1991 MCA debut album Stand Strong. Though it wasn’t a commercial success, the album’s standout tracks were the title track, the jazzy “Morning Will Come,” the gritty “You Can’t Have What You Can’t Get,” and the steppers/boppers favorite, “Stop Fanning the Fire.” (Ed Hogan, AMG) Tracks:

Δεν μπαίνω καν στον κόπο να παραθέσω επιχειρήματα.Από το family το beach town (η καλύτερη επιλογή) και το forgive me (η χειρότερη, σαν give peace a chance ένα πράγμα) είναι τα δύο που επιτρέπουν ελεύθερα στο διαδίκτυο, αλλά άκουσέ το ολόκληρο εδώ .
Was ist denn da bloß wieder los?
Foto: blythemaniaco

Out Louds, Shiny Toy Guns, Mando Diao, Lacrosse, The Sounds…
Under sin sjukdomstid började Patrick med sin fru Lisa Niemi, skriva på sina memoarer, ”The time of my life”.

A música entitulada de “Live Like We’re Dying“!
I grabbed some magazines at work yesterday and quickly flipped through them last night before hitting the sack. I love this photo shoot in the July issue of Vogue Australia. It’s so pretty! Also, of course I chose the blue cover of POP! It’s so hawt!
Gotta get a move on, enough loitering and surfing online. It’s gorgeous weather outside and I’m headed in to town!

Runpee.com has an idea that’s been a longtime coming.
The web site tells you the best time to take a quick bathroom break during current movies.
Better still, it’s an iPhone app!
Set the application’s timer feature and it will buzz you when it’s time to go.
The only down side seems to be that the more popular the app becomes, the more you’ll have the whole theater jumping up 33 minutes into Harry Potter, when Dumbledore says, ‘Off to bed, pip-pip.’
But until we reach that critical mass, you can be one step ahead of your bladder-filled theater mates.

Tavi posted a video on her blog a couple of days ago where she talks about her cover for the magazine POP which just hit shelves in Sweden. It’s a fabulous cover and I just got my copy today (guess which cover I chose!)
Not only is this an interesting issue of POP because of its cover star Tavi, it’s also the first issue with new editor-in-chief , Dasha Zhukova. As is common with a change in chief, the magazine has also got a bit of a facelift with new POP logos designed by Scott King.
Go get your copy of POP now! They’re flying off the shelves!

It all began with Fawlty Towers, apparently. Manuel, the waiter, ‘e’s from Barcelona… How exactly that relates to a 30-strong big band from Jönköping, Sweden, I have no idea, but that’s what they called themselves. I’m from Barcelona.
They have to be the geekiest-looking group of people I have ever seen, with their 70’s-80’s wardrobe, crazily cool hairdos and glasses so big Kim Jong-Il would have spec-envy. The lead singer and writer of most of the songs, Emmanuel, is a glorious ginger, stylishly scruffy in a way that few could achieve without descending into homelessness.
The music, on their first album at least, is big silly bouncy pop, it’s happy, daft and nostalgic. Yes, all that at the same time.
They are also responsible for the best concert I have ever been to. They were supported by Finno-French duo The Do (you do know a few of their songs, you just don’t know you do…) and the lovely SoKo, so things were already off to a good start by the time the 28 members of I’m from Barcelona’s tour formation trooped onto the stage. And started throwing giant balloons into the crowd.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a band interact with their audience in quite the same way, it was like a big kids party, we were all singing along and getting quite giddy, jumping about, bouncing balloons at each other, throwing confetti and just generally having a good time. Usually a concert is all about *us* watching *them*, but in this case, we were all interacting with each other as well. I don’t think I have ever had that much exercise, neither before nor since. I felt like I was 15, I didn’t even feel my poor aged almost-30 joints creaking in protest as I hopped and jumped. Well, not until the next day, of course, but what the hell, it was worth it!
The new album, “Who killed Harry Houdini” is a lot less big and silly and daft, and quite a bit more nostalgic, almost melancholic. It’s still good, but it doesn’t quite give me the same kick as the bouncy “We’re from Barcelona”…
Internet sensation Kid Cudi’s Man On the Moon dropped today. After months of dominating ClearChannel radio with his track “Day N Nite,” (and its various remixes, which made it no less intolerable to hear every five minutes), Kid has the respect of both hip hop’s most majorest stars (Kanye) as well as some indie cred (MGMT worked on a track). Music magazines, clingers to the bygone pre-mp3 era, will no doubt salivate about Kid’s crossroads musical identity; he is a true artiste, they will say, seamlessly traversing the terrains of electro, pop (especially 90’s and foreign pop sounds), rock (again, lotsa 90’s pop-rock here), and hip hop, among others. His production team includes Ratatat and Kanye West! And this will be perceived as awesome!
Other critics will note that this album succeeds on its terms, as, like one of its strongest influences, 808s and Heartbreak, it is an effective auditory study in the atmosphere of isolation and sadness.
What do I think of this dude? I kind of don’t want to stomp on him, because he’s from Cleveland, wrote “Day N Nite” in his bedroom 2 or 3 years ago, got famous on the Internet, blah blah. But I mean, pfork really had a point when they said: “You may not have picked up on this, despite him signaling it desperately from thousands of yards away, but Kid Cudi is a sensitive soul, wrestling with the sorts of inner torments that you or I could only imagine.”
So though I won’t be the first person to note this, Kid’s sad confessionals are about as deep as my pockets the day before I get paid. Example: the echoing of dueling “no no nos” and “yeah yeah yeahs” on “Heart of a Lion.” OMG, is Cudi torn, or something? Can’t decide if no or yeah? I’ve been there.
Witness the song “Soundtrack 2 My Life.” He sings: I’ve got some issues that nobody can see/and all of these emotions are pouring over me. Granted, I sometimes have a hard time picking a verb for profound things I am trying to express, so I almost sympathize with the clumsiness of the verb in a line like, “emotions are pouring over me.” But really, I write these blog posts while I am sitting at work and working on deadline to boot, so I don’t have time to agonize over word choice. If I made a cd, by golly, I would agonize, with my tortured soul, about the best goddamn word to describe my pain.
But Anna, one might say to me, you are a big fan of 808s and Heartbreak, which often lacks emotional articulation. For instance, one song features the line “How could you be so heartless?” repeated ad nauseum. Well, detractor, let me tell you, that Kanye’s rhymes strike on the elemental, truthful side of basic, as opposed to the trite and surfacey side of basic. He is grief-stricken and makes up for ineloquence with sincerity, and, of course, heartbreak! Many times on Cudi’s album, notably in “Soundtrack 2 My Life,” “Day N Nite,” the opener “In My Dreams,” etc, Cudi layers his adolescent poetics with a slathering of self-pity–not a novel or interesting combination, but one that reminds us all of time spent writing in fuzzy-flowered journals purchased at a suburban Claire’s in 1998. I don’t suppose Cudi got his journal at Claire’s though. Prolly went to Hot Topic.
However, the latter half of the album holds some real gems, I mean, if you like 2008 Kanye West as much as I do. “Sky Might Fall,” is a Kanye produced track, with scratchy beats and an organ, dredged from the pile of tape lying in Kanye’s Bentley; it’s almost certainly 808s lost track. “Cudi Zone,” a hilarious song name that reminds me of ‘cuddle zone,’ a place I go when I’m feeling sad, features “Robo-Cop” synths in an optimistic chord progression and the most skillful rhyme-delivery on the album. Then Cudi sings, and you swear it’s Chris Martin or the guy from TOTR. He’s actually a good singer! The busy production really propels this song, taking it from bridge to bridge like a soaring neo-romantic space ship be, which is exactly what Cudi was going for.
The hi-lite of the album for me is Cudi’s Daft Punk rehash, “Enter Galactic.” I liked this song within the first second of hearing it. I thought, “Yes! Jamiroquoi!” in that it is a bopping, space age child of Steve Wonder. It features the soulful synths of what is perhaps DP’s greatest love song, “Something About Us.” Just ignore the Shatner sing-talking, and his neologism “angelesque,” and you will be absolutely charmed.
This album’s spaceophilia is fashionable, but something of it smells like 2007. Oh yeah! That’s because that was the year Kanye reinvented hip hop vocab with Graduation, and invigorated black music’s fascination with space.
Finally, it might be best to think of Cudi not as a revolutionary, but as a hyped-then-disappointment-inducing pseudo-indie genre-hopping artist in the vein of Santo/igold. Remember her? No? Oh. She was supposed to be the NEW M.I.A.!
We’ll have to wait for the NEW KANYE, but this guys pretty good for now. If Cudi can get away from wearing his influences on his sleeve, and um, record sleeve (see Kanye’s production cred), then we might really have something new.

Hey jude, dont make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.
Hey jude, dont be afraid.
You were made to go out and get her.
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better.
And anytime you feel the pain, hey jude, refrain,
Dont carry the world upon your shoulders.
For well you know that its a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder.
Hey jude, dont let me down.
You have found her, now go and get her.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.
So let it out and let it in, hey jude, begin,
Youre waiting for someone to perform with.
And dont you know that its just you, hey jude, youll do,
The movement you need is on your shoulder.
Hey jude, dont make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her under your skin,
Then youll begin to make it
Better better better better better better, oh.

I am possibly the only person in the world who gets excited about autumn. Summer peaked too early and then dragged on for fucking ever. I am ready to live in my fur coat and my Docs, and make a twat of myself in tutorials, and warm the new flat in a cautious and civilised manner, and write more (less emo) songs, and just generally be the apparently slightly different person that I appear to be now for like, unspecified reasons. Does anyone else have these Alice in Wonderland feelings? Or is it some kind of mental illness?

On Brite Lite Brite’s MySpace under About Me, “We like to party!!” and “We like to play music loudly.” Those two are good enough for me. BLB definitely fall under the category of electro-pop, but they also take a acoustic tone. Their songs are still extremely dancable though, even with the low-key chick vocals. I recommend this, quite a fun listen.

The band Girls, who we’ve done a few music videos for now, are popping up all over the music scene lately and are being featured on Urban Outfitter’s main website! Their new track “Lust for Life” can be seen on this month’s AV Club page or below!
The video was shot and directed by Aaron Brown and Ben Chappell and really captures what’s at the heart of today’s youth in San Fransisco, which has always been a town to provide an excellent backdrop for political as well as artistic movements.

No i najróżniejsze elementy aktorsko-operowe w śpiewie.
Polecam ten film, fascynujący obraz Ameryki lat trzydziestych i czterdziestych. Radio było wtedy głównym nośnikiem informacji i rozrywki, a jak się ostatnio dowiedziałem, 75% ludności USA rozpoznawało dyrektora radiowej NBC Orchestra, dyrygenta Arturo Toscaniniego. Dyrygent gwiazdorem – ciekawe czasy.
Allan Jones – Donkey Serenade:
Z Internet Archive można pobrać tę i inne piosenki Allana Jonesa. Wszystkie dobre.

Judging by my empty cupboards (completely bare except for a 12-pack o’ Ramen noodles), the time has come for yet another soul-searching Stash It or Cash It blog post, in which I mine my over-abundant CD collection for expendable yet slightly profitable goods. Hopefully I’ll find a few treasures worth selling at Wherehouse music (or for cherishing–but in this time between paychecks, I’m more keen on cashing in). As I rifle through my collection I stumble upon a Mariah Carey three-fer: her triumphant comeback of sorts The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), the serviceable though inferior Mimi retread E=MC2 (2008) and the pivotal yet impossible-to-remember Charmbracelet (2002).
I will start by saying that Mariah Carey holds a special place in my heart. She speaks to the part of me that’s eternally adolescent, poorly-adjusted and hopelessly insecure. Carey touches the Outcast Mixed-Race Girl in all of us who’s still finding her way and trying to belong. I love Mariah Carey. That said, I need to part ways with my colossal CD collection. Sacrifices must be made. Therefore, I take the opportunity to reflect on Ms. Carey (okay…Mrs. Nick Cannon) and what her music means to me.
Somehow fans began to take Mariah Carey for granted as the 2000s fell upon us. We eased away from her records to attend to a new crop of singers who boasted one name (Ashanti! Pink!), were former Mouseketeers (Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, the bushy-haired boy in NSync), or were of Latin heritage (Ricky Martin of Menudo and an intriguingly tacky Fly Girl named Jennifer Lopez). If you were a teenager during Carey’s 90s heyday you may have taken a notion to attend college where the Butterfly singer was passe and, as a result, you started trolling Wuxtry Records or attending shows at the 50 Watt to learn what real music was.
We left her side for a moment, figuring that things would be okay. When we returned, however, things had changed. She was no longer Mariah Carey, the glorious capital-S Singer; she was now one of the Hyphenate, like the aforementioned Lopez: singer-slash-actress. Carey starred in a film called Glitter, a semi-biographical Cinderella tale that is not bad if you set aside all expectations and suspend all disbelief. The film flopped. September 11th 2001 occurred, a day that is not remembered for being the release date of the Glitter soundtrack. Rumors swirled of her deteriorating mental health and she wound up in a hospital, suffering from exhaustion. So far, the New Millennium was not treating Carey so kindly.
Mariah Carey needed to return to her roots, to vent her frustrations and to turn a new page in her career. This brings me to the part of this post where I actually begin discussing her 2000s discography. With the exceptions of Glitter (which I borrowed from the library once, listened to and returned the next day) and her Greatest Hits album, I own all of her New Millennium catalog. I’ll start with her 2002 release Charmbracelet, a necessary yet ungainly album. There were a literal handful of songs that I liked. “You Had Your Chance” is a bouncy, candy-painted kiss-off song aimed at some lousy boyfriend. Not especially groundbreaking but it was one of the only two songs from this album to be put on repeat for at least 20 minutes–when I like a song I really like a song. The other playback-worthy track of this set is a little ditty called “Clown”, the most buzzed-about song of this album. Allegedly, this is a veiled attack against Eminem, the talented yet obnoxious Great White Hope of Hip-Hop whom MC may/may not have dated for a time. This is not a great performance from Carey, marred by a flurry of catty, soft-spoken lyrics that don’t quite pack a satisfying punch. Unfortunately, the only joy derived from this song is in scanning the liner notes in search of clues about the alleged Mariah-Eminem affair. With the exception of these two tracks Charmbracelet simply doesn’t contain as many gems as her other records. Fans know that this is Mariah’s Cathartic Album and that alone is reason enough to appreciate it for what it is. Who’d dare begrudge an artist the space to unburden her heart and soul on record? Charmbracelet was an important release for Carey but it’s an album that, Godblessit, I’m willing to part with.
In an age of instant stardom and rampant selective memory, Mariah Carey’s Charmbracelet served as little reminder of her glory days and offered little reason for her continued relevancy in the music industry. She was no longer the monster hit-maker that she was only a few years before. People like Beyonce were ascending the pop music Everest. Shows like American Idol were cranking out Mariah Carey wannabes, all jockeying for her spot and possessed of two things that Carey no longer had: an instant and ravenous fan base and an easily exploitable naivete about the music business. Carey was still a Grammy winner and a multi-platinum artist but the 90s had just ended and she had reached yet another crossroads. She needed to reclaim her top spot at all costs. Or perhaps she didn’t. But Carey has become notorious for her work ethic and her desire to please. So she regrouped.
2005 saw the release of The Emancipation of Mimi, a return to form that featured all-star guests, great songs and, of course, The Voice. Talk of Carey’s diminished vocal range was beginning to emerge and Mimi largely dispels such talk (among fans, at least–music critics, in keeping with a decade-long pastime of Mariah bashing, were less convinced). This album boasts collaborations with rapper/producer/mogul Jermaine Dupri, the tracks that are, in my opinion, are the best of the album. The first single, “It’s Like That” features a springy 808 and piano-assisted groove, simple lyrics and au courant (for 2005, anyway) pop culture references in which the “purple is taking [her]higher” and she’s the lotion to lackluster ashy “chickens”. It’s a fun, lighthearted song followed by the plaintive piano driven (and JD-produced) “We Belong Together,” which features one of Carey’s strongest vocals up to that point. As is the fashion nowadays, Carey’s vocals are augmented by Auto-Tune and filters, lending to the belief that MC’s pipes ain’t what they used to be. Either way, this is one of Mariah Carey’s strongest showings in years. She ably teams up with the Neptunes, en vogue hitmakers in ‘05, for a few contemporary cuts but mostly hues closer to her Pop&B pedigree. This was the album that saw the return of Mariah Carey and, for me, is a keeper.
Ever the prolific and productive recording artist, Carey is now gearing up to release a new album, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel. The first single “Obsessed” is another entry into the Eminem-Response Record sub-genre of pop music–actually this is a small subgenre as most of Em’s targets are beleaguered teeny-boppers who are, baffingly, scared shitless of a near-40-year old still rapping about his prescription drug addictions, bad childhood and unfortunate love life…but I digress. “Obsessed” is a frothy sort of non-song designed for massive radio play, video countdown over-saturation and rampant downloading. She hits back at Eminem, again allegedly, by calling him “delusional” and proclaiming that “you’re a mom and pop/ I’m a corporation.” So far, I’m less-than-excited about the new album but I’m pretty sure that I’ll buy it anyway. This is Mariah Carey, after all.
My ambivalence about the upcoming Memoirs mirrors my similar feelings about Carey’s post-Mimi exercise, E=MC2 in 2008. Her lead single was a chirpy, fluffy number called “Touch My Body,” a come-hither coo that beseeches a lover to, you know, touch her body. The low point of the song comes with her imploring her suitor to not post their “flick on YouTube”. I should have taken my initial disdain for this track as an indicator of what to expect from the this album–and should have stayed far away. This track, unfortunately, exemplifies everything that’s gone askew with Carey’s career. While I can appreciate the drive to stay current, “Touch My Body” and every other record on E=MC2 are trying too hard to appeal to the teenyboppers and twentysomethings that she no longer is one of –the kids more likely to buy a Rihanna CD (or, rather, to download her album) than they are to dig into a Mariah record. Many of Mariah’s original fans tuned out when she shed her marriage to Tommy Mottola…and her clothes. So maybe there is a certain savvy and wisdom in courting a new generation of fans. But the main ingredient of her 90s Wonder Years has gone AWOL as the first decade of the 21st century draws to a close–her powerful voice.
We’ve finally hit upon the most troubling aspect of her 2000s output. I’ll preface this part of my posting with a nod to the fact that voices change with age: they peak in the mid 30s and lose range from then on. That is the unfortunate rub of making divadom your stock and trade. No one can be an octave-scaling goddess forever. Whitney Houston can’t do it. Aretha Franklin of today doesn’t hold a candle to the Aretha of the 60s through the 80s. I witnessed a performance by Etta James on Austin City Limits in which she didn’t even attempt to scale the heights of her classic “Tell Mama”. Voices change. That, of course, is not my growing frustration with Mariah Carey. She’s written very popular and memorable songs but she’s been accused of a certain vapidity. She’s been harangued for showboating at the expense of true soul. This becomes a problem if you are a singer known more for the sizzle instead of the steak. What happens when the sizzle starts to die down?
As much as I love Mariah Carey, she came to prominence on the heels of her spectacular voice…and little else. In her defense, of course, when you’ve got a one-in-a-million voice like hers you don’t need much else. You don’t need much else but it’s nice to have for a rainy day. Carey’s still got a gorgeous voice when she’s using it to full effect but she hasn’t really been doing that for the past few years. Does she choose to play it safe? To coo to expensive, diverting beats, content to coast along with the diminished standards of today’s pop music? Has she truly lost The Voice? Who am I to say? E=MC2 typifies this problem with reliance upon Auto-Tune (again) on the T-Pain-featuring “Migrate,” a dumb song but one of the only ones from this album that I managed to enjoy. The other song I like is “Bye Bye”, a sweet ode to lost loved ones that, in my opinion, is hampered by its self-referential tone (”you never got a chance to see how good I done/ you never got to see me back at number one”). But the other tracks strike the ear as so much pandering to the trends of the today’s fickle pop market. “Cruise Control” is a clunky reggae-ish midtempo joint featuring a Bob Marley scion and Carey’s distracting attempt at Jamaican patois. “I’m That Chick” is amusing in that she, apparently, “do’z it naturally/hypnotize like Biggie,” a proclamation that rings as the least natural lyric of this entire album.
Mariah Carey is endlessly fascinating in that she will always be Mariah Carey, the most successful female recording artist of all time. She no longer has anything to prove to anyone–not her fans, not the industry, not the critics. She may not even have anything to prove to herself anymore. Perhaps that is the conceit that drives her albums these days. Gone are the days of sweeping ballads, big curly hair and concealed cleavage. We’ve got the Mariah Carey that Mariah’s always wanted to be–free to dress like a 14 year-old girl, free to release the hip-hop-tinged songs that she’s always wanted to, rich enough to not be pressured by financial gain when it comes to her music. She’s apparently happily married and has everything she’s ever wanted. While fans like me wouldn’t mind her recording a standards album, she just wants to have fun. Who wins, though? Is it wrong to expect a certain standard of Mariah or should we, as fans, just be happy to go along on her journey? This is a question I ask myself whenever I listen to E=MC2 and become irritated. Perhaps I should stash this record for posterity but somehow I don’t think it was created for me.
A new study claims cigarette smokers are tricked into thinking certain types of cigarettes are healthier than others.
The terms “light”, “low tar”, and “mild” have been banned in the EU since 2002.
Smoking opponents say it is now time to package cigarettes in plain packages, so the consumer won’t think one smoke is healthier than another.
Given this latest research, that shows I’ve been fooled into thinking lights were better for me, I am chucking my ultra-light cigarettes, and switching to some class of filterless smoke.
Of course, if my planned move from the U.S. to England goes through, I won’t know what the hell I’m smoking at all, but at least I’ll know it’s a level playing field.
Here’s my proposal for the new generic packaging:

No, Girls Aloud aren’t breaking up, they’re still very intact. But, the sexiest of the sexiest is set to unleash her solo single this week. “Fight For This Love” is the title. The song has been described as the ani-Xenomania (Girls Aloud’s producers) by Popjustice, There are no words out about the producers, it has all been very hush hush. Cheryl is yet to talk about this project herself!
The single will be played during Radio 1’s Chris Moyles Breakfast show around 8AM GMT.

BoA recently celebrated her 9th year in the music industry (can you believe it? in the industry for 9 years and only 22!); to honour this achievement I’ve decided to post my top 9 BoA MVs/songs. Enjoy~
Do The Motion, from 2005’s Outgrow, is arguably BoA’s finest song. Produced with a sweet, summery jazz sound, it showed BoA’s versatility and hit the top spot of Japan’s Oricon chart. It remains BoA’s only number 1 single to date. The video is pretty sweet; the European feel and BoA’s simple dance routine compliment the sound of the song really well. You can tell BoA worked really hard on this single and it deservedly is my number 1.
This next song is one of my favourite songs of all time! It’s the song I listen to when I’m in a great mood and it makes me even happier. It’s also the song I listen to in the mornings if I need a bit of get up and go. Sweet Impact is from BoA’s 2007 album, The Face and was pretty successfuly (reaching the top 5 of the Oricon). The Face is a great album (my favourite BoA album for sure). Although, actually, when I first heard this single I was disappointed and didn’t listen to it again for a good while. A few months later I was hooked ^_^ The MV is awesome too, BoA does a great homage to Michael Jackson
QUINCY was the song that started it all for BoA and me. Released in 2004 on her Best of Soul best of album, it was one of the first J-pop songs I got into aside from Utada. In fact, BoA is the second J-pop artist I got into after Utada so she always has a soft spot in my heart. Who’d have thought I’d still be loving her 5 years later? I can remember listening to this song, getting hooked, coming into college the next day and telling everyone about it. It’s not BoA’s most famous song, but I love it ^_^
Eien (Forever) was released as a promotional single from BoA’s japanese release of her debut English language album (which was released with a best of album; the whole release was called Best & USA – does that make sense? ^^;). From the very first time I heard this song I loved it. It was a return to the BoA that I loved. Catchy melodies, a hook of a chorus, sweet vocals. It’s one of my favourite BoA songs ever and shows how BoA has matured as an artist over the years.
Meri Kuri (Merry Christmas) is also from her Best of Soul album. It was BoA’s first Christmas themed song and hit number 5 on the Oricon charts. I love this song, it’s very simple and very sweet. I love Christmas and love Christmas songs so this is perfect for me ^_^ It also shows off BoA’s very good voice (something for which she is not always given credit). The MV is simple as well and shows a softer side of BoA.
This retro BoA! Amazing Kiss is about 8 years old and taken from her very first Japanese album Listen to My Heart. It’s very very 90s pop (overly produced should I say?). This is a bit silly, but I love it ^_^ It’s weird to see BoA so young and being so talented. Especially considering the fact that 8 years ago I was messing about in class.
Valenti is BoA’s biggest selling single (with over a 200,000 copies sold), it’s a catchy pop song with a real dance vibe. I think this is what people would suggest BoA’s sound to be like. I like this song, it’s cool, it’s not my favourite song though but if it comes on, I don’t mind tapping along to it ^_^ There’s Japanese, Korean and English versions to boot! My favourite is probably the Japanese one though.
This is another Christmas inspired song. It was a huge success for BoA (which I think she was surprised by). It was narrowly beaten to the top of the charts. It’s a beautiful ballad with BoA proving that she can sing beautifully with heartfelt emotion and not just dance around to club beats. Winter Love is perhaps one of her best songs and should perhaps be higher up on this list… *scratches head*
I Did It for Love is BoA’s second English single and features the vocal and production talents of Sean Garrett. It’s a killer tune! It’s an awesome song! It’s a bit repetitive and I know BoA has been slated by a lot of people for still having an accent. But I think that’s rubbish, I can understand her perfectly well and she’s Korean! What’s the problem with accents? Not everyone has to sing in the same General American accent to be successful. Sadly, BoA’s American career doesn’t seem to be going too well, perhaps America is just not ready for an Asian popstar yet. Which is a shame, there’s loads of a talent there. Anyways! This rounds up the list. I hope you enjoyed it, I wish BoA many more years of success! I I I I I did it did it did it for love~ ^_^

Sea Wolf was started as a solo project by Alex Brown Church, sometime around 2003. He plays with members of the Ship Collective Community, who rotate through bands. Alex has recently gained some publicity after having two of his songs featured in commercials – “You’re a Wolf” in a GM commercial for the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, and “Sea Monuments” for a Radioshack holiday commercial. Sea Wolf is currently signed to Dangerbird Records, and has released three albums :
“Get to the River Before It Runs too Low (EP)” – 2007
“Leaves in the River” – 2007
“White Water, White Bloom” – 2009
The Song Featured:
This track starts out with a big, dramatic, almost theatrical opening. Water rippling, with lots of echo room and big, heavy bass drum. It builds up slightly chaotically, but in a good way, with the typical “rewind” sound effect mixed in there as an undertone. Then it all stops, save for the water sound/fire crackling/scratchy record.
Demure acoustic follows, very simply, introducing singer Alex Church’s remarkably amiable singing. A second acoustic soon joins in, along with a cello and an odd sound effect that sounds like a looped slide-up pluck on a double bass. A simple, music-box esque piano riff joins the sections together, tying Intro, Development, Chorus, and Outtro together nicely.
As kind as the music is, the lyrics are equally, if not more, evocative of soft emotions. The lyrics, vocals, and instrumentals blend together to make a thoroughly warm and loveable song.
I met a girl on Halloween
When she was lost, and I was drunk
And it was dark and cold out when we left
And as we walked the rain started
The leaves softened with every step
And all around us people slept alone with their dreams
The wind came down from up the planes
And blew the leaves all through the streets
I wondered how far leaves could really fly
Would they rest in suburb yards
Or make it to the city
Or would they end up in the river just to float away
She pointed to a small brick house
And said it was where she grew up
The lights were out, she aked if we could stop for awhile Find More lyrics at www.sweetslyrics.com
Her hair was still just getting wet
The water running down her neck
Collecting in the handprint in cement beneath her feet
Apparently there’d been a death
Someone close and nothing left
Because she hadn’t left him in the end
I saw her blush when I asked
If she always talked like that
She said it only happened when she drank
And later on I felt her hand
Slipping into my cold fist
She promised me a kiss as soon as we got home
Her costume had begun to tear
She ran ahead and turned to me
Her laughter echoed through the empty streets
