Nighttime Commercials Make Us Dumber

Or is it that we are naturally dumber at night?

It’s uncommon for me to be up at 2 or 3 in the morning. I’m generally a night owl and have bad sleeping habits. There isn’t much to do at 3 AM but watch television. Luckily, even if nothing good is on to watch, I can always count on dumb commercials and infomercials to be on almost every channel.

Don’t get me wrong – I see dumb commercials all day long. But, some of the products sold at night are absolutely ridiculous. Last night I was introduced to the Bottle Top. Yes, it is exactly what you would think. Some genius has come up with the idea to make a piece of plastic with a cap that can be slipped onto a can. Good for virtually any type of can “soda, beer, iced tea, or energy drink.”

I’d hate to be the guy at the party who had to stop and put a bottle top on my beer before drinking it.

The commercial opens with a woman opening her fridge to discover an open soda has spilled. A puddle of brown liquid floods the door compartment. While this no doubt happens in the real world, does it happen enough to warrant needing a product to fix the solution? Here is a simple and free idea – stop putting your open soda can in the door and put it on a shelf.Open metal cans can't travel. What a waste!

There are a handful of other disasters in the 30 second spot, like kids spilling soda or the drinks going flat.

My favorite has to be “open metal cans can’t travel, what a waste!” First, has the company never heard of a cup holder? Most cup holders these days are designed to fit drinks of all sizes and its generally safe to put a soda can in one and not worry about it spilling. Second, what is this lady sipping on that she has to crouch beside her car out of sight to drink? Sipping on a beer in the parking lot before the trip home, perhaps?

The interesting thing about these commercials is the time they most frequently air, which is at night.

Are we tired and more likely to make less rational decisions during the wee hours of the morning?

Can we be sold anything at 3 AM?
