Musical imperative

My music library is now somewhat eclectic, though it’s fair to say that I’m by and large a rock fan. I’m tempted to say that I mainly listen to 90’s rock [1], punk and post-rock but my iTunes ‘Most played’ list, my MP3 players and the CDs in my car would collectively prod me in the chest and call me a liar. My sister describes my tastes as ‘wierd’ and I guess that’s probably the most appropriate description of a collection which encompasses ambient, indie, death metal and pop from the UK, US, Africa, Europe, Japan, and South America.

Every now and then, as and when the urge takes me, I’m going to be posting a few tunes for your listening pleasure. Most of the time it’ll be a selection of tracks I’ve listened to in the past few days or weeks. None of these are going to be downloadable for obvious reasons, but hopefully they’ll find some appreciative listener who’ll go off and expand their collection a little.

Maybeshewill – He Films the Clouds Pt. 2

This song is one of my most listened to over the past year or so. It’s a beautiflly structured and superbly executed track with a kick at around 5:43 which is utterly euphoric. I get chills every single time I listen to it.

Fair to Midland – Wife, the Kids and the White Picket Fence

I had to put Fair to Midland up but I had a real problem picking one track. While this track is undeniably excellent and shows off their songwriting skills and the vocal range of Darroh Sudderth, I always tend to listen to the album as a whole.

Maximum the Hormone – Tsume Tsume Tsume

Just look at that song title. It’s got to be a Japanese band, right? Indeed it is. Maximum the Hormone are one of my favourite bands at the moment, and have been for the past couple of years. They’re an insane amalgamation of rock, metal, pop and funk. Tsume Tsume Tsume was the lead track on their latest single. Listen – and wonder why the hell I dig them so much.

He is We – Light A Way

I don’t know where or how I came across this track, but I’ve listened to it a good few times lately. It’s stripped down to the bare minimum of acoustic guitar and female vocal. It’s the chorus that really does it for me.

Rise Against – Collapse (Post-Amerika)

The lead track from their excellent album, Appeal to Reason. The previous album didn’t really grab me but with AtR, Rise Against were right back on form. Superb energetic punk rock.

———————————————————————————

[1] I refuse to call it ‘grunge’. Nirvana, Tad, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, AIC, Mother Love Bone and all the rest had very different sounds and really shouldn’t be lumped in as one homologous whole. It’s like putting Clutch, 36 Crazyfists and Poison the Well together because they have shouty blokes in the band
