The video itself is very creative, but a little to corney for my taste. I did catch a cameo or two of Nashville’s finest…but what was up with the hot tub scene! haha! Today marks the first day of my year-end countdown of the 75 (and some others that did not make the list) memorable songs that were heard this year. 2009 probably was one of the greatest years in terms of producing quality music. Take note though that songs #75-41 are not ranked accordingly. Once we go to #40, that is where the fun really starts. Let us get the ball rolling, shall we?

This stunning collaboration featuring Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat has been played so many times on my playlist. The song features good songwriting out of Mraz and a beautiful vocal work done by Caillat. Definitely, the song is a keeper and worthy of your listening time.

In what turned out to be one of the year’s party anthems, Birthday Sex catapulted Jeremih into mainstream success. The song may be annoying to some but I do think that the title gave the song some of its success. The song has a catchy chorus which I liked though the other verses seem bland.
#73 S.O.S (Let The Music Play) – Jordin Sparks
From: Battlefield
Jordin Sparks’ attempt at making a dance song does not really fail. In fact, the song does show that Jordin Sparks is not only a ballad girl. She can definitely do something else than sing ballads. The song’s got a good hook to show for it as well. The song is simply irresistible and one of the only few songs that I liked from her latest effort (with the other song being Battlefield)
#72 Fallin’ For You – Colbie Caillat
From: Breakthrough
Coming off the success of her debut album, Coco, Caillat manages to step up the notch convincingly with Fallin’ For You. The song is typical Caillat – filled with great acoustic hooks and pleasing lyrics that will surely be appreciated by the casual listener.
#71 Party In The U.S.A. – Miley Cyrus
From: The Time of Our Lives
One of the very few cringe-worthy songs here in the countdown, Party In The U.S.A., is filled with the brilliant line “Noddin’ my head like yeah! Moving my hips like yeah!”. Cyrus may have changed her image through the song but I have got to say, the song is one of her better singles out there.
#70 Knock You Down – Keri Hilson feat. Kanye West and Ne-Yo
From: In A Perfect World
One of the best songs from the Hip-hop genre this year. Keri Hilson shines in a synthesizer-heavy song. The best parts of the song would be Kanye West setting the tone with his rap at the beginning of the song and the appearance of Ne-Yo.
#69 Amazing – Kanye West feat. Young Jeezy

Amazing has turned out to be one of the most popular songs in the basketball community all due because of that NBA commercial which used the song. I have gotta admit that the song is one of best out of West’s latest album alongside Heartless. Kanye is simply Kanye – amidst all the controversies, his talent still shines.
#68 One Time – Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber practically rose to fame with this song. Under Usher’s tutelage, Bieber might be one of the biggest pop stars soon. The song is absolutely cheesy and cringe-worthy. However, it got into this list all because many fangirls loved it. Who would ever forget the line “Your world is my world and my fight is your fight!”? Definitely unforgettable yet laughable at the same time.
#67 What About Now – Westlife
From: Where We Are
A stirring rendition of Daughtry’s What About Now by Westlife makes it into my countdown. Nothing really outstanding except for the fact that the boyband managed to make the originally rock song a very fruity pop song. The song is still a decent cover nonetheless.
#66 Bad Boys – Alexandra Burke feat. Flo Rida
From: Overcome
Alexandra Burke is a stunner. What’s surprising about this song is that a Flo Rida apperance actually helps in spicing up the song. Burke’s vocals are outstanding. Also, the beat is astonishingly spectacular. One of the greatest songs from the Pop genre that I have ever heard this year.
#65 Live Like We’re Dying – Kris Allen

The cover of the song from The Script was the recent American Idol winner’s first single after winning. I was not really impressed with the song but heck, the song did teach me some valuable things like there are actually 86,400 seconds in a day. Seriously though, Kris Allen’s effort in the cover is actually laudable though he could have chosen to do an original for his debut single.
#64 Killing In The Name – Rage Against The Machine

How the heck can a 17-year old song crack into my countdown? By beating the single from the latest X-Factor winner, Joe McElderry, that’s how. After a campaign spearheaded by Jon and Tracy Morter succeeded, the song by Rage Against The Machine did the impossible – becoming the new Christmas No. 1 and successfully stopping the 5-year streak of X-Factor singles getting the No. 1 spot come Christmas time.
#63 Sweet Silver Lining – Kate Voegele

One of the very charming singles from Kate Voegele’s latest album, Sweet Silver Lining manages to convince that Kate Voegele is indeed a special talent. It is just sad though that Kate never gets a lot of attention because of her musical prowess. However, it is a good thing though that Kate’s in One Tree Hill.
#62 New Divide – Linkin Park
From: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – The Album
Linkin Park cracks the countdown with New Divide which was included in the soundtrack of the second movie of the Transformers franchise. What’s likeable about the song is that it brings out the distinct Linkin Park sound – highly-energized and simply put, intense. Chester Bennington’s vocals are brilliant as well.
#61 No Surprise – Daughtry
From: Leave This Town
The first single from Daughtry’s sophomore album is definitely great. I actually think the song keeps the sound that made Daughtry famous after his Idol career. Though not as great as It’s Not Over (from the Daughtry album), No Surprise still should keep fans satisfied.

Real Estate are a Psychedelic Surf Band from New Jersey. All members of the band are also members of other local and/or national bands. Real Estate released their debut CD in 2009 to critical and fan acclaim.
Beach Comber—-emerging from a glorious haze, the guitar leads are so relaxed and pleasant you can almost feel the sunshine on your face. The vocals enter the song…they are a pleasant mix of Alternative Folk Rock that will stick with you for a time. This is smooth, layered and perfectly played pop music meant for a wonderful summer day.
Pool Summers—-Deeper in tone and with a much more 70’s inspired feel to it, this song starts with the pleasant jangle that the band is known for. the vocal…pushed way to the back of the mix is second to the crystal clear delivery of the shimmering pop music the band produces. The swirling and layered feel of the song takes you places you can’t get to until June…this is wonderful!!!
Suburban Dogs—-Reminding me of the great psychedelic sounds of the 70’s, this song is rich in texture and sound. The vocal is once again secondary to the shimmering glory of the lead guitar and the lazy drum. Truly that is the beauty and rarity of this band…musically the band is stellar and that is what matters most for fans…not the worlds greatest voice but a nice coming together of excellent voice and stellar musicianship that creates masterful odes to life and emotion.
Black Lake—-With a slow plodding drum beat and strong stellar guitar strums, the vocal again takes on that swirling drug induced pleasure of summer. The sound of the music is so bright and shimmering, you can not refuse or resist it. This is remarkable music…even better than the glory days of 90’s shoe-gaze pop, this includes emotion and true feeling. Astounding!!!
Atlantic City—-Deeper in sound and with a stronger bass line than on other tracks, the lead guitar enter the ray and make you think of the best of The Charlatans or Galaxie 500. This is so shiny and warm, you will forget it is December by the end of the release. this is remarkable…so many sounds going on in a remarkably controlled way. Fantastic!!!
Fake Blues—-Still shimmering with a simple guitar chord and light song construction, the vocal is so pushed to the back it is nearly undecipherable. But that is ok…this is better than Stone Roses at the peak…better than anything the brits produced hiding right here at home in New Jersey. Remarkable!!!
Green River—-Much lighter in sound, the song is almost breezy and fresh like ocean air. The sun pours through the chords and the tone is light and airy. This is remarkable….fresh, new and comfortable all at the same time. as the song progresses, the tone of the song gets even lighter with a subtle dark undertone that is there to remind you all is not gold…this is incredible….you must hear this release.
Suburban Beverage—-Coming up from the darkness at a pleasant pace, the song is easy and breezy in a musical sense. The fuzz of the guitar is present in the back of the mix [how do they do that?]. The chord changes manage to create a nice subtle happiness that will bring you out of whatever mess you are sitting in…this is almost magical. Too good to be true.
Let’s Rock The Beach—-Sounding a bit mundane, the song suffers from the fact that it really sounds like the last song in a remarkable familiar way…the tone s sweet and happy…the guitars are a nice juxtapose of deep and airy sounds that play off of each other to magnificent effect. This is wonderful….just a tad bit too predictable.
Snow Days—-This was just the change that I needed to round the album out on a positive and fine note. The voice is wonderful…the tone is so warm and the music is magically layered. This is freakin’ amazing.
Massive Attack have been pounding trip-hop into our ears since 1988, so no wonder they have become a household name for all of us indie freaks who want something a little different from the music scene. The now duo of which are best known for their single “Teardrop” are embracing their track “Paradise circus” as their next single and to be completely honest I don’t think it’s a terribly bad song but i consequently don’t think its a rather good tune either however the hype that is expected to follow this single shall be massive (DUN DUN DUN the pun master strikes again). The slow soothing cooing of Hope Sandoval glides over processed beats and glass cracking string harmonies that makes this the perfect winter lullaby. If your anything like me though, you don’t want a weak shandy of a winter tune but a pint of whisky with a high dose of toxic liquid entwined in it to really get the blood pumping round your body (Although, i must inform you that this kind of beverage many kill you!)

Death Cab for Cutie was created in only 1997 though they have the sound of a much older polished band. They were named after a 1967 song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. They started as a small little known band from Washington state, and produced their music through Barsuk Records.
Then in 2004 they signed a deal with the large Atlantic records, and their fame continued to grow. Their music can be found all over in soundtracks, including their new song “Meet Me on the Equinox” which is one of the main singles for the movie New Moon.
Death Cab has a very unique sound that is entirely their own, but not everyone likes it. Many of my friends for some reason seem to hate them with a deep loathing that I cannot understand. Another interesting thing is that the a new band called Owl City seems to have taken the same musical approach as Death Cab, in fact they sound very similar.
Much as I enjoyed Hot Chip’s third album, Made In The Dark, I’ll admit that it was a slightly cluttered, claustrophobic listen. There was a lot going on in some of the tracks – “Shake A Fist” and “Don’t Dance” in particular – and though this was offset by the sparser, more low-key numbers (the title track, for instance, was a masterpiece of concision), the overall vibe was very busy and slightly unfocused. Which is why I’m very excited by the literature surrounding the band’s forthcoming fourth album, entitled One Life Stand because a range of sources have suggested that it will be a more stripped-down and focused affair – an album’s album, if you will.
The album’s release is being preceded by a digital release of the title track which, in truncated form, occupies a radio-friendly three-and-a-half-minutes. And it’s a great pop song, in the catchy mould of “Ready For The Floor”, albeit with an added jaggedness and bite. “Tell me where you’ve been… where you’ve been staying” whispers Alexis Taylor in his most conspiratorial tone, backed by clattering steel drums and a synth line rich in overtones. After a time, synth-wizard Joe Goddard pipes in with a somewhat supernatural moan which continues throughout the chorus, followed by one of the most glorious, buzzing synth melodies I’ve heard in a long time. “One Life Stand” is foreboding and seductive; its relatively simplistic structure belies the love of pop music beating at its core. It’s a wonderful addition to the band’s catalogue of cult classics, and I really do expect it to break high into the charts.

HOW: The first time I’ve heard about The Smiths was on some “50 essential albums” list of a French magazine in 2002. The Queen Is Dead ranked 48. I was at this time of my life in my quest of having good musical tastes so I tried hard to find all those 50 albums. I bought it some months later and give it a listen with enthusiasm. Meh. I didn’t like what I was hearing, it lacked manly power (!!), Morrissey’s suave voice was hard to appreciate after a first listen, at least in my case, and I guess I was too young to fully appreciate the lyrics. Years pass and one night Alain Delon on the sleeve of The Queen Is Dead won’t stop yelling at me: “Play me! Play Me!” OK, OK, you certainly deserve another try. This time again, not a particularly good listen — I really enjoyed the eponymous song though.
The revelation came not so long ago; I guess it was in May of this year, discovering my favorite Smiths song, “The Headmaster Ritual.” From that moment I had a totally different vision and understood all the catchiness and true essence of The Smiths. I came back to all their releases, and they became one of my top 5 bands. Funny how things can change.
WHY: First of all I must say: I love The Smiths entire discography, and there’s very few artists in this category. Every single they’ve released is a pop gem. And believe me, I don’t use to word “gem” lightly. Their songs are gems because they catch perfectly the atmosphere of the UK at the time with a great sense of humor.
I must confess Morrissey’s lyrics are really among the greatest I know, and his neo-romantic, full-of-emotion voice is at first disturbing, then you get used to it, and you’re in love with it.
Johnny Marr is in my opinion the greatest pop guitarist, because of his shimmering sound and for his ability to find catchy melodies that go perfectly with Morrissey. Dare I say … poetry!
Behind this hypnotizing guitar-voice combo you’ll find one of my favorite rhythm sections, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce. Rourke is my favorite in The Smiths — his sound enhances the whole poppy perfection and his bassline are always on the top; plus he can get really funky (“Barbarism Begins at Home“). Mike Joyce is just perfect and solid behind the drums. Together they are the best band making pop. To me, they are the definition of pop.
SONGS: I try to sum up here the essence of The Smiths. The songs come from all their studio releases, I only excluded Rank (1988) — being a live album it doesn’t seem to fit in.
I also did my best not making a “singles list,” as you probably know how hard it is to find a Smiths song that’s actually not a single. Of course you’ll find here classic Smiths songs because they simply cannot be avoided, but you’ll also find poppy B-Sides and juicy non-single material. I must have missed a lot of essential Smiths songs, but hey, 80 minutes is the rule! So here’s 80 minutes with the Smiths. Hope you’ll enjoy this perfect introduction!

This is the second installment of the Pop Therapy series, and apparently the shoe is now on the other foot. If you’re lucky, like I sometimes am, and find yourself wearing a pair of those Karl Lagerfelds and needed an excuse for just one last dance down memory lane kicking up your heels the entire way (bang bang!!), well here’s a soundtrack to set your interpretive dance routine to.
For this self healing journey I unprofessionally recommend bringing your favorite hairbrush to sing and scream into. Let the emotions rise up like an embittered sour dough and then when you’re all worked up and a hot hot mess, enjoy being able to give a toast to the memories. And that’s it. Just the memories because if you and the significant other broke up it was because the relationship was broken to begin with.
We’re classy consumers over here so the next stop for anything broken is naturally the dump. Toss it all out. Or burn it down. I know I did. And they’ll never be able to pin it on me because I know enough not to use accelerants nor to burn a pair of Nikes in a bathtub.
This program is a 12 step because, well, getting dumped sucks a lot more than having to break up with someone- the shit end of the stick always stinks, let’s face it, and that requires at least 2 more steps if not more. Not only did Eminem come back earlier this year with an album (Relapse) that sold nearly 900 thousand in the first week, he is returning once again. This time Eminem is going to have bonus tracks that weren’t on the original Relapse album. Eminem’s Relapse: Refill will come out on Dec. 21st. I plan on doing a full review. So the promo video for Namie Amuro’s “LOVE GAME” was posted on facebook either yesterday or the day before and it took a few listens before I was able to fully appreciate it. Despite my seeming inability to learn another language, I have a weird affinity for music in languages I don’t understand. And if I didn’t like it at first, somehow it grows on me.

I’m hoping that this album won’t be a let-down, seeing that I have been deleting a ton of music from my laptop as of lately. There have been too many albums with only a few good songs coupled with album-filler-songs. Hopefully “PAST
So my reality world this week revolved around the decorating show Color Splash on HGTV. First I have to say how absolutely hot David Bromstad is. He was season 1 winner of Design Star on HGTV and his 6 pack is amazing. Now that I’m done drooling, man does this guy have a talent no one that I know has. He is re-designing rooms for people who 1. Have no budget, cause I know the show isnt fitting the bill and 2. People whose homes are over 1500 sq ft. , at least that is how it appears.
I would love to see the show do rooms for the real people. The working class of this country that has made America the country it is today. Let him work his Color Splash magic on the less fortunate, or people who need a great make-over and have $100 to spend. Where are the shows like that? Hey David and the folks at Color Splash……..come do my family room and let’s see what your truly made of. Challenge on…
Die neue Single und das neue Video sind endlich da. Zeit um einen Moment zurückzulehnen und das ganze zu geniessen. Denn das was man in nur drei Minuten und dreiundfünfzig Sekunden miterleben kann ist die Frucht eines Prozesses der vor genau einem Jahr angefangen hatte.
Ich habe mich verliebt und zwar so wie es mir schon lange nicht passiert war. Wunderschön und fürchterlich zugleich. Denn es hat meine Augen neu geöffnet und die wichtigste Erkenntnis, d.h. mit Leib und Seele begreifen, geschenkt die man als Mensch überhaupt gewinnen kann. Grösser als Geld, Macht und Besitz ist es die Kraft, die wenn man sich ihr vollständig hingibt, das Unmögliche möglich macht und Berge versetzten kann.
Die Person die für mich diese Liebe verkörperte ist gegangen, aber die Erkenntnis ist geblieben und hat uns dieses wunderschöne Duett als schöne Erinnerung da gelassen mit der wichtigsten Botschaft überhaupt.
Liebe ist das Allergrösste.

Mickey [Toni Basil]—-Another gem from the 80’s that was built around a video presentation and a synth line that will stay in your brain for days. Toni Basil, a choreographer, made a huge splash with this very fun and unforgettable dance hit that still lives in our minds. This is great even if just for the synth line that is embedded in my brain for the next 50 years. Marvelous!!!!
Lies [Thompson Twins]—-Neither Thompsons nor twins, this trio helped to define the sound of the 80’s with their infectious synth pop that still plays well 20 some years later. this song, built upon layers and layers of different sounds features a vocal so cold and removed you just know it was made for the decade of indulgence.
The Break-Up Song [Greg Kihn Band]—-I really know nothing about this band…I do know that this was not the biggest hit of the band by any means…that would be Jeopardy, but none the less this is a huge sounding rock song that has an infectious and undeniable hook…the voice has a slight hoarse sound that appeals to me a lot. this is great…where was I?
Putting On The Ritz [Taco]—-One of the best novelty songs of all time, taco was an odd little man who delivered a song that was a throw back to the 50’s with 80’s synth. this was so fun and odd that you could not deny the guilty pleasure it brought. classic!!!
Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? [Culture Club]—-The song that started it all for the first pop drag Queen in the history of popular music…this song combined a nice 80’s dance beat intermixed with a reggae beat that made you care less about the appearance of the vocalist. This is classic 80’s pop…the emotion in the voice of Boy is incredible…you feel his pain and you can dance to it…marvelous!!!
Who Can It Be Now [Men At Work]—-Classic…the men from down under stormed the American pop charts with single after single in the early 80’s and then disappeared. This song, like many other 80’s hits was founded on the power of the video and the paranoid tale played very well on the TV screen. Colin Hay continues to record and tour today without the rest of the band, but this song will live on far after he is gone. wonderful.
Switchin’ To Glide [The Kings]—-Yet another band from the era that escaped my ears….if you know anything about these guys leave me a comment..please. The song is a huge overblown synth anthem that is accompanied by a vocal that fits in perfect with the era. the song has a huge chorus that evokes excitement and agitation…I really like this!!!
Dancing In Heaven [Q-Feel]—-I literally adore this song…the synths are overblown, the vocal drips of sex and you have to move as the song builds and builds. this is actually more like 1979, but who cares…this is wonderful!!!
Never Say Never [Romeo Void]—-Best known for the smash A Girl In Trouble [Is A Temporary Thing], this song still follows in the same vein…this is a nice post-punk/Goth feel song that you can dance to and groove to. Full of sexual innuendo and erotic moaning, the song also incorporates nice horns and a synth beat that is driven by actual drums and guitars. Very nice.
Cool Places [Sparks & Jane Weidlin]—-A really fun song from the first strains, the vocal of Weidlin and the Sparks are a huge contrast to each other and thus makes for a really interesting romp through synth land. the voice is far from the Go-Go’s, but you realize how important she was to the band as an accompaniment singer. This is literally fantastic!!!
As the prdictions came true Susan Boyle hit number one with over 701,000 copies in it’s first week. The best sales week for an album in the U.S. this year. Also marks the best opening week for a female artist’s debut beating out Ashanti for the title with 503,000 in 2002. Andrea Bocelli’s “My Christmas” stays strong at Numer 2 for a third weewith over 201,000.
American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert’s RCA debut “For Your Entertainment” comes at Number 3 on with 198,000 copies. Rihanna’s fourth album “Rated R” climbs at Number 4 with 181,000 – the young diva’s best sales week yet. Cousin Cole is, by now, no stranger to the readers of this blog. Nice as he is, he sent over this four minute preview of an remix he did of late 70´s punk band Manicured Noise.

Here’s my latest remix, coming out Monday on Caroline True records. Manicured Noise was a late 70s post-punk band from Manchester — I was asked to remix their song “Metronome” for a remix EP along with mixes from Pocketknife, Jon Da Silva (resident at the legendary Hacienda club in the 80s/90s), and Wedderkopp + Taylor.
I took the song on a pretty different direction from the original (big sax!) and it has gotten a great response with all kinds of crowds as I’ve been playing it out over the past few months — probably the biggest response of anything I’ve done recently.
The label gave me a short edit to send out to blogs, so feel free to post this. It’s missing the second half of the track (with the big breakdown), but it’s a good bitrate.”
